Game Freak is making a comeback with a brand new sequel that’s bound to hit fans right in the nostalgia. Pokémon Legends: Z-A is officially set to launch at the end of 2025 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
Not only will the game feature a host of cool new elements, but it also brings back one of the most beloved features of all time—Mega Evolution. Curious about the gameplay and what else is in store? Let’s find out.
Gameplay: Pokémon Legends: Z-A

As the sequel to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Legends: Z-A transports players back to Lumiose City, located in the Kalos region. One of the most exciting returns for hardcore Pokémon fans is the reintroduction of the Mega Evolution system, a fan-favorite across the community.
Most of the game’s setting takes place in Lumiose City, which is currently undergoing a major urban redevelopment to create a better living environment for both humans and Pokémon alike.
Exploring the city feels even more dynamic this time around with a vertical traversal system, letting you run and leap across rooftops and scale Kalos like never before.
But it’s not all concrete and skyscrapers—players can also head out into the Wild Zone, a sprawling area that mimics natural Pokémon habitats. This is where you’ll catch wild Pokémon and battle them in the open world before tossing a Poké Ball their way.
You play as a Pokémon Trainer, sharpening your skills through engaging real-time battles. These allow for fluid movement and real-time commands during fights. There’s also a special Z-A Royale battle zone, which becomes available only at sunset.
Time management becomes part of your strategy—train and explore during the day, and fight in the Z-A Royale at night.

Highlight Features and Systems in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

What’s a new Pokémon game without exciting features? Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduces several gameplay systems that fans won’t want to miss. Check them out below.
Mega Evolution is back

Fans have been buzzing about the return of Mega Evolution, where select Pokémon can temporarily evolve into even more powerful and fearsome forms.
Only certain Pokémon are capable of Mega Evolution, such as Mega Altaria, Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Absol, and Mega Charizard X. These transformations could be the key to victory in intense battles.
To trigger a Mega Evolution, Trainers must form a strong bond with their Pokémon. When your Key Stone resonates with your Pokémon’s Mega Stone, the evolution process kicks in.

Stealth for sneak attacks
Another exciting new feature is Stealth mode, which allows you to sneak up on opponents and land surprise attacks. Pull this off successfully and you’ll land a critical hit with high damage output. You can also use stealth tactics to knock out enemy Pokémon before they even get a chance to strike.
Z-A Royale battle zone

This is the ultimate battleground to determine who the strongest Trainer and Pokémon really are. The Z-A Royale zone is only available at night and features high-tech holographic visuals. Only the most skilled Pokémon can earn an invite to this high-stakes arena.
At the end of each match, players are ranked from Z up to A, with Rank A being the most prestigious. The top-ranked player earns not only the title of Champion but also the chance to have one wish granted.
Ready to rise through the ranks? Be prepared to go head-to-head with top competitors like Urbain or Taunie in this elite tournament.
Ranking system from Z to A

Unlike traditional games where the highest rank is “S” or “A”, this game flips the script. You’ll start from Rank Z and battle your way up to Rank A. Winning battles in the Z-A Royale is the key to climbing the ranks.

Promotion Matches
To move up the ranking ladder, you’ll need to participate in Promotion Matches—special battles that pit you against powerful Trainers. Win these, and you’ll secure your next rank.
Challenger’s Ticket

But first, you’ll need a Challenger’s Ticket to enter a Promotion Match. You can earn these by collecting Ticket Points, which are awarded when you win battles in the Z-A Royale.

Starter Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

At the beginning of your journey, you’ll choose one of three starter Pokémon:
- Chikorita (Grass): A gentle Pokémon that uses the leaf on its head to sense temperature and humidity. It spreads calming, fragrant leaves that soothe those around it.
- Tepig (Fire): Uses its keen sense of smell to sniff out food. It’s fast on its feet and can surprise enemies with fiery attacks and quick dodges.
- Totodile (Water): Small in size but mighty in bite—its powerful jaws can crush just about anything, sometimes even its own Trainer if you’re not careful.
According to leaks from 9meters, all three of these starters will have new Mega Evolutions that align with in-game factions:
- Mega Meganium (Grass/Fairy)
- Mega Feraligatr (Water/Dragon)
- Mega Emboar (Fire/Fighting)
Diverse NPC Characters

- AZ: The mysterious middle-aged man who owns Hotel Z and claims to be over 3000 years old

- Eternal Flower Floette: A 3000-year-old flower Pokémon that never leaves AZ’s side
The Legendary Pokémon: Zygarde

One of the most exciting appearances in this game is the legendary Zygarde. This Pokémon can change forms depending on how many components you collect:
- 10% Forme: Dog-like
- 50% Forme: Snake-like
- Complete Forme: Equipped with wings and a tail
Zygarde is formed from Zygarde Cells, while its core (or brain) is made of Zygarde Cores. Its role? Acting as a guardian to ensure the city doesn’t repeat the mistakes of its past.
With all these incredible features and the return of beloved gameplay mechanics, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is shaping up to be a game well worth the wait. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the world of Pokémon, this sequel promises an experience full of action, emotion, and strategy.
